Speaker:  *Edward Roberts, Firensics, Inc.
Course Title:  **Overcoming the Challenges of Vehicle Arson Investigations
TDI Course #:  110028

**This course explains the adjuster’s roles in vehicle arson investigations.  Prior to reality television documentaries on fire investigation and the sharing of information in the social media age, vehicle arsons were much more straight-forward: vehicles and equipment were essentially mechanical in nature, most of the structure was fire resistant, and policy holders were ignorant on investigation techniques.  Today insureds know how well we can detect arson, the ubiquitous use of plastics increases the likelihood of a “total burn” even in accidental fires, and the heavy reliance on electronics and computers has complicated both the potential accidental causes of fires, and the elimination of those accidental causes.  As a result, vehicles are more often reported stolen, recovered burned.

It is more critical today than ever that the adjuster obtain documentation early, lock down the back story of the fire and/or theft, and allow the investigator to dig through every aspect of the involved equipment: burn patterns, post-fire transport, pre-fire conditions.  Through a team approach, it is not impossible to prove vehicle arson, but it is more difficult than ever before.
